One solution might be to shut off the fuel and let the carb run dry, stopping the engine. The needle would not be raised during the storage period and probably would not be stuck closed. Another thing would be to coat the Viton with a silicone compound. If you use the fuel shutoff method, be sure to shut off the ignition after the engine stops. Failure to do so will result in another non-starting problem.
