The previous owner may have poured sae 90,140 or something gear oil in the hydraulic/transmission reservoir. Hard to believe but there are still people who don't,won't or can't read the service manual.
The gear oil softens the wet brake and clutch lining then it crumbles off. The filter plugs rapidly doing what it should.
Once the lining comes off the steel to steel contact will get more expensive in a hurry.
In short, oil analysis before purchasing used equipment saves the potential new owner lots of money & time.
Sorry but it's possible someone wasn't altogether honest when selling that tractor.
