Sounds like brake lining stopping up that filter. I'm not familiar with the 2040, but on a 2440, there's a screen before the filter. (You NEED an owners manual and shop manual) It might be catching some of what's plugging your filter. Check for brake material. Finally, you will need to drain and flush the tranny/rear end/hydraulic system to remove all the contaminates.

I've been around some tractors that make brake noise from day one, and others that don't make the first sound. That MIGHT be an indicator, but then again.....John
