Mark, looks to me like you will need to: Incorporate to isolate yourself from liability Get a good lawyer upfront to make sure the necessary legal documents and procedures are followed to protect yourself from liability. Purchase liability insurance. Hire an accountant to handle the corporate taxes properly. Hire a professional structural engineer to properly design the appartus and certify the design. Hire a certified testing institute to do the testing on the completed design. Make sure that the company has certified welders to properly weld the product. Hire a technical report writer to write the operators manual complete with all the safety guidlines identified for proper use. Properly certify that the incomming steel stock is what has been detailed on the engineering drawings. Ahhh, boilerplate, boiler plate and more boiler plate. If a customer can prove negligence on the part of the company then he has a chance at winning the lawsuit. Also if he wins the lawsuit against the corporation then he can go after the individuals in the company who controlled the design and build of the product. Hate to rain on your parade Mark but I've been there and it ain't no fun!
