In their day these setups worked, was the best there was then electronics took over. That #1 wire will go to the brake variable control that is operated from brake line pressure. If you don't have the control that goes with this spring reostat you don't need it. This is for setting the maximum voltage TO the brake control and the brake control has a sliding spring thing in it that applies the brakes as needed. You will be much happier with your brake results if you spring for the 80$ for a new electronic Reese or Tekosha controller. They come with wiring directions and operating instructions. Please do yourself a favor and get one. They also help troubleshoot problems by the LED's.
