I've seen -40 a few times. We had one particularly cold winter back in the 1940s when it would go down to -40 every night and the heat of the midday sun would bring it up to -20. Mercury isn't very accurate below -38 (C or F-it doesn't make much diff as the scales cross over at -40). The melting point of mercury is around -38 and it starts to congeal at -40.
