A lock up torque convertor typically contains a hydraulically operated clutch that "locks up" or disables the torque convertor once you've reached cruising speed. This eliminates "slip", resulting in a least heat generated in the transmission, and better fuel economy. Early versions were operated by a combination of the hydraulic valve train in the transmission, and often a vacuum switch that would allow lockup only at lighter engine loads. Nowadays, the engine computer decides when, and how firmly the convertor clutch should lock up.
