The ram and seals are strong when pulling/under tension. However too much push when the hydraulic ram is "unsupported", can kink. Mounting on the top three point link make it easier to bend the rod or rapidly wear the seal/bushing.
A ram used in a loader etc is in a frame that limits "kinking".
