I agree with what you said on the burried rod. I had a little better luck. They had a 12 foot I beam at work they were getting rid of. We burried it so the top is even with the floor and there are three places where we fixed a 4 inch PVC pipe so we can tie a log chain through and then also place a jack or two on the beam. Another thing we did is we burried a four foot length of PVC pipe in the floor so if we ever need to press on a long shaft, the shaft can extend down into the floor.
