We are going to test drive a 2001 Cheverolet 2500HD with an 8.1 gasser in it. It has 75,000 miles, lookes like new inside and very clean outside. My question is this: I was recently told that the GM 8.1 is known for using a fair amount of oil. Like a quart every 1,000 miles at least. This was comming from a fellow who works in a GM dealership, so I would think he would know a little bit about these motors. Have any of you guys out there had any bad experiences with these motors? I know fuel economy is not the greatest, but this is a truck to be used primarily for pulling our gooseneck trailer hauling hay and equipment and also our livestock trailer. We have two other GMC 1/2 tons for the light work and running around. This would be a replacement for a 1999 Ford F-250 superduty with a V-10. Great motor, but the truck just doesn't ride or handle like a GM pickup. Time to go back. Thanks for any opinions.
