I have a 2001 K 3500 with the 8.1 Yes, it will consume some oil, but with mine it's more like a quart every 1,500 to 2,000 miles. In my opinion it is not a problem. The shop foreman at the dealer asked GM about it, and was informed that the 8.1 was designed that way to insure proper lubrication when the engine is working hard. If you have never experienced the power of an 8.1 you are in for a treat.
