a little Puzzle today for fun

Here's a little puzzle for you: my Ford 600 (this could have happened with any old tractor as well) wouldn't shut off, when the switch was turned off, but it also wouldn't crank without the switch on. So, I killed it with the choke until I had time to take a look. After a couple of dead batteries, and a new one!!! from leaving the switch on, I decided that I had time to take a look. Figured it was a switch, so I replaced the switch with a new one, But -- no change!! Remember, it would not quit running when the switch was turned off, and would not crank unless the switch was on. Puzzled me for several days until I woke up one Saturday morning about 4:30, and it hit me like a bolt!! Fixed it with no problem. What was it?? I'll answer later. RKS
