Your charging system was back feeding your ignition system after you started the tractor. With the switch off there was no power for the ignition system. Turn the switch on and the ignition system gets power from the battery. After it is running the ignition system is by-passing the starter switch and drawing power from the charging system. There are a couple of ways to produce these results depending on what type of charging system you have. I beleive the Ford 600 still had a generator and voltage regulator and I assume you have not changed it. Therefore I would say you replaced the voltage regulator. But if you have updated your charging system to 12v and installed an alternator you could do this simply by running a wire from you starter switch to the field terminal on an internaly regulated alternater. In that case I would say you wired it wrong but you don't make any mention of messing with the wiring before your problems started. You replaced the switch and battery after you have problems. Without knowing the type of charging system it is impossable to say for sure but I am thinking you just replaced the voltage regular.
