OT: Any tricks for growing spruce/pine from seed ?

I've tried this twice and not been very successful.

My first try was an utter failure. The trees came up and then quit growing.

My second attemt was with some Ponderosa Pine seeds. Jo tranplanted them outside and one of them made it through the winter and is showing signs of life.

Jo found a Colorado Blue growing next to a rose bush this spring. I transplanted and it shows signs of life too.

I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this and what your tricks might be.
