I suspect you will find that the drainfield has failed (leach beds sealed up, so effluent has nowhere to go). In a properly functioning system, almost all of the effluent will have been absorbed before it gets to the end of the pipe, so really doesn't matter if there is a cap. The fact that a lot of liquid was reaching the end of the pipe leads me to suspect that it won't perk along the line, like its supposed to. At this point, I would just watch it for a few weeks- if it dries up, you're OK.
