Adding tetraethyl lead to gasoline was (and still is) the cheapest way to raise the octane level of gasoline. I remember when the US Military went to 115 octane gasoline for aviation. They didn't buy anything else. That gasoline had so much lead in it that you would see lead residue on your fingers when draining the sumps. (Also filling cigarette lighter at the same time-shot a flame a foot high-best for lighting cigars). Lead would show up in places never seen before. Like soldered spark plug electrodes, over-running Borg Warner clutches on helicopters that were lubed by engine oil, etc. I know that in any country not bound by environmental rules (read that third world) you will find leaded gasoline. At least for a while.
