I mow a 2 acre lawn with an AC D-12 with a 6' Bushhog finishing mower (3 blades) on the 3 pt. hitch and with an IH Cub Lo-boy 185 with 5' belly mower. I use one or the other depending on my mood (or both when I can talk my wife onto the IH). The AC with 8 forward speeds allows me to find a faster workable speed than the IH (3 speed). However, my 6' mower on the AC does not seem to gain me that much more cut width over the 5' belly mower. The reason is that I can cut with less overlap because I am looking forward and down at the edge of the mower on the belly mower. On the 3 pt hitch 6', I am judging overlap by tire path and glancing back at the mower. I seem to overlap a little too much with the 3 pt. mower. Also, the belly mower gets in tighter places. I have noticed that with the 3 pt. 6' the rear tires of my tractor seem to mash down some types of weeds in my lawn that do not spring back up for as clean a cut. Cuts fescue evenly however. Takes me a couple of hours to cut 2 acres with either machine. I am investigating tree and shrub plantings to cut down on my grass area.
