in fact Butch, most everyone has had the experience of loading down an automobile that requires "say 91 or better" octane by the mfg, and using maybe 87 or less just by choice. When you hear the rattle, generally under a load maybe uphill, that most people attribute to the "valves," it is the valves rattling. The rattle is heard because the exhaust valve is attempting to close, but the detonation of the fuel is too slow, and the explosion blows by the closing valve, rattling the valve in its assembly. Hydraulic valve lifters solve most of this problem at idle and when not under a load, but they can't compensate for low octane fuel, when the engine rpm is high enough that the push-rod is held with the full force of the lifter at its highest pressure. A tractors valve timing is not so critical that you will hear the valves rattle, but the engine will gain efficiency if you compensate for the delayed detonation, which you have done. Cheers, RKS
