The friend who fixes my Toyota is a top GM technician and we were talking about that engine Thursday night. He says the engine is built in Japan (by Mitsumi, if I recall correctly)and the transmission innards somewhere offshore, as well. GM builds the case and the controls, and that is all he has ever had to fix on one. (For the last two years this guy has won free vacations as the top GM automatic transmission technician in Canada.) He has observed 24 miles per Imperial gallon in that model unloaded, and claims it is superior to the earlier GM diesel which in his opinion gave "lousy mileage, worse than my gas pickup." In all, he shows a lot of respect for that engine/powertrain, and such compliments are rare coming from this source.

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
