Contact your county agricultural agent. He should supply you with a soil test kit and many publications on lawn care. A soil test will tell you what, and how much fertilizer, lime, etc you need to apply. My guess is either you have un-balanced soil, or an insect infestation of some sort. Basically, you probably need to fertilize with a fertilizer containing insecticide. You may want to get some that has weed killer in it as well. I think it's to early in the year to do much good now, probably better to wait till mid september, and plan on over seeding at the same time.
