Winches for tractors - and alternator capicity??

I want to attach a winch to the front of my tractor to pull some logs up out of a ditch, not big trees. My dad has an electric winch that I could attach to my tractor but how do I tell if I wont burn out the alternator in trying to run the winch. My brother said if you just run it off of a battery it runs down real quick... Plus my tractor is 37 years old with an old original alternator etc, plus it only has a sears diehard tractor battery not a full sized battery... Anyone do this? Pros and cons??
