I want to attach a winch to the front of my tractor to pull some logs up out of a ditch, not big trees. My dad has an electric winch that I could attach to my tractor but how do I tell if I wont burn out the alternator in trying to run the winch. My brother said if you just run it off of a battery it runs down real quick... Plus my tractor is 37 years old with an old original alternator etc, plus it only has a sears diehard tractor battery not a full sized battery... All valid concerns, if you're looking at long term or especially hard use. For one job, there are a couple of things you can do to help avoid problems: 1. Make sure the battery is in good shape, topped off with electrolyte and all the connections are clean and tight. Also check that the alternator belt is tight. 2. Use a snatch block or pulley to double your line. This will cut the load on the winch motor in half, it'll draw less current and be easier on the battery. It'll take longer, 'cause you're pulling in twice as much line, but it's still better than a straight pull. 3. Stop frequently, check the winch motor and the battery cables for heat. When it gets too hot to hold onto comfortably, let it cool off before continuing. 4. Make sure the tractor is running at a high idle and the ammeter (if you have one) isn't showing a huge discharge.
