Alan, our Fire Co. bought a new 6.0 in a F-550 chassis and had a brushtruck body put on it. At 32 miles on the odometer, somehow one of the valves hit a piston with a bang. The Ford dealer worked on it, but we got a call that somehow it happened again when they went to start it, in the shop, after the work was done. They wouldn't give a satisfactory explanation for why it happened, just mumbled something about the head gasket not being torqued right. Now how that could cause a valve to hit a piston is beyond me. When the dealer was done with it, we went and picked up the truck and drove it home, about 200 miles at highway speeds, no problems. It has several hundred miles on it now, still no more problems so far. Being a fire truck, it doesn't get a lot of miles put on it. It is hauling 300 gallons of water. plus the body, pump and equipment weight for a total of about 17,000 lbs gross. I've never been a Ford fan, but lemme tell ya, that engine has a boatload of torque! We have a lot of hills to travel up and down around here and I haven't found one yet that it won't accelerate on going uphill. You actually have to get out of the throttle going uphill to keep from going too fast for the bends in the road. I've been impressed with it. Now if it only keeps from having that valve hit the piston again, I think we're going to like it.

Grain Threshing in the Early 40's - by Jerry D. Coleman. How many of you can sit there and say that you have plowed with a mule? Well I would say not many, but maybe a few. This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
