I have given your problem more thought and I think I am correct. As I see it, with the switch off you are somehow reading battery voltage at no load to the battery. The battery is weak but you still have a little voltage. When you turn the key on you are loading the battery with the gauges and possibly some shorted wire that is draining the system resulting in a no voltage reading. After some time passes the battery recovers enough to run the engine again but the discharging begins all over . This causes the engine to die again after a time lapse. Post again after tomorrows test and if you have not fixed the problem I will continue to assist. Advise regardless. Good luck
