Paint hardener, while it sounds good, does not do the thing it sounds like. It does not make your paint more resistant to scratches or chipping. It does make it set up faster, especially in cooler weather. It is an accelerater which causes the chemistry of the resins (which are what attach the pigments in the paint to the substrate, in this case the metal of the tractor) to "dry" faster, causing the paint to become "dust free" and "set to touch" quicker. this is a consideration if you're painting outdoors or in a open enviornment such as a shop or barn. Depending on what type of finish you are looking for you can select for different resin types, ie Acrylic, Urethane, Alkyds, etc. all have their advantages and disadvantages. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend them if you're looking for something to make the paint more resistant to scratching, chipping, solvents, etc. By the way, besides being a weekend farmer, I am a Research Paint Chemist with an international company selling coatings to the automotive, agriculture, consumer, and industrial market.
