Should I use paint hardener?

I bought a tractor painting video from a link from this page and they recommended paint hardener. Dave Erb wrote in the latest issue of Old Abe's News that paint hardener is a carcinogen and that it will make your paint brittle and subject to chipping. Dave said hardener, contrary to popular belief, does not add shine. He said shine is a result of a smooth prime job and good application of acrylic enamel. So, here are two supposed experts with two divergent opinions. What experiences are out there? The paint stores tell you to use it, but they are trying to add to your bill, it is after all their job. I would appreciate any opinions out there.
