The only reason I always say alternator is because I have got burned trying to get generators to work right. I use all my antique equipment almost daily as work tractors as well as show tractors so I can not afford one of them not start or chrge when like now it's hay time. You can get a 6V generator turned into a 12V one if you choose to spend the money. For me it is more practical to buy a alternator for ten bucks and slap it on. Just my feelings though.
