5-30 is the recommended oil, so why not use it??? More likely you have piston slap, rather than lifter noise at startup. For low friction and maximum mileage, GM used pistons without much of a skirt, and they were prone to clatter. There have been lawsuits over that. Just Google "5.3 startup noise". The link below is one such "hit". Also, are you using the correct filter? Most of these modern engines need a filter with a built-in check valve to keep the oil from draining back, causing noise and lack of oil pressure for a few seconds at startup. Even if the filter you are using is listed for that app, I'd try a different brand just to confirm the filter is not adding to the problem.
