I always figure that I`m not bidding against anyone else, instead I`m bidding on the value of the item. On almost every item I bid on, I look at the other items that person has for sale, what they have sold in the past, and who has or is bidding. When I see the same bidder bidding on many of a persons items, but not bidding on simular items of a different seller, I know with out a doubt what is happening. Unless I can get a really good deal, I just avoid that seller totally. Ebay makes this sort of research pretty easy, but it"s almost impossible at a live auction.
