The mags. didn't require a battery on the tractor. They generate their own spark.
That is what the snap you hear when turning it is, they have an impulse in them and when it trips it generates the spark. (Very simple explanation)
I'm not sure why they made the change to dist.
I like the mags myself, at least when they are working correctly.
