Changeover from mag to distributor ignition was on account of cost. A distributor is a lot cheaper than a mag. When tractors began getting electric starters (thus permitting distributor ignition due to the presence of battery and generator) mfr's could keep cost down a bit by putting in a distributor instead of the magneto.
