In my search, here's what I think I learned:

The Ford 7.3 p/s was an awsome engine. The change to the 6.0 was a big mistake. Maybe the problems are ironed out now, but who knows?

I talked to several people, both in person and on the 'net, who reported problems with Ford automatic transmissions.

I used to have a '98 Dodge gas engine with automatic and had repeat problems with the tranny.

I started to focus my attention on finding a used Chevy or GMC with Allison transmission just because of the Allison reputation and my own frustration with the Dodge tranny troubles.

Then one day I stumbled on to a '98 Chevy 454 with only 23,000 original miles. So I bought it and I'm happy. This was last May before gas prices went crazy. Since then, diesel has settled at a price about 40-60 cents higher than gasoline, so I'm still happy.

If I were buying new, based on what I learned while shopping, I would go with the GM product. General Motor's financial problems are a concern, however, and there's not telling where that will end up. GM might become a division of Toyota or something. I know my daughter's new Pontiac Vibe is just a Toyota Matrix with different sheetmetal. It even had a Toyota oil filter on it.
