BEWARE OF BACK YARD BREEDERS!!!! We bought an AKC registered toy poodle from a backyard breeder several years ago when we lived in California, and ended up spending $1,000+ on surgery to correct a congenital deformation in the knees on her hind legs. According to the Vet, this happened as a result of someone breeding dogs that are too closely related.

We currently live SE of Denver, and my wife bought another registered toy poodle at a local pet store (NOT a chain) for about what your're wanting to spend that turns out to be a very healthy & (for a toy poodle anyway) well mannered dog. You might check to see if there's a club in your area; someone there might know of a source that's careful about inbreeding.
