I'd vote for the in-block style, but you might be limited by the amount of underhood space or simply the location of a block plug to access. The next best would be the type that goes in the radiator hose. I've used one like that in my old Volvo for about 15 years with no problems. You've got to leave it plugged in all night, but it does a reasonable job of getting the block warm. I've got a L3010 Kubota (about 6 years old) that starts right up even when the temp is down around 0 degrees F. Wow, I couldn't believe it when I hit the starter switch. The newer diesel engine designs seem to be much easier to start at all temps. Good luck.
