HD-5s are nice machines. First of the modern AC crawlers. The 2-71 Detroit/GM Diesel run and run and parts are available. Good advice on the undercarriage rails, pins, and bushings can get spendy in a hurry ( these make up the 'chain' part of the tracks). Rollers , idlers (front wheel), and sprockets too. Get someone who knows crawlers to check it out unless this is a project. Two problems from your discription; 1 the steering clucth is out adjustment or the plates are stuck together both are easy and cheap to fix, 2 the brake should have slowed the machine down so it is out of adjustment, disconnected, or broken (band or linkage again fairly easy and cheap. Expensive is when the track doesn't get power. I can think of much worse first crawlers. AC built 30,000 HD-5s and almost that many HD-6s which is basicly a re-engined HD-5, so parts should be available for quite awhile. Good Luck, Lee Bradley
