Aaron, the only stupid question is one that goes unasked so yours is fine as far as Im concerned. The John Deere advantage of a hand clutch was that it was out there on the side and you did not have to split the tractor in two to change it as in most other tractors. Case made some hand clutch tractors also and Minneapolis Moline I believe. They dont have a foot cluth also. Now, some companies like Allis Chalmers wanted to have a live PTO whereby you could stop the tractor or slow its ground movement without disconnecting or slowing the PTO which was superior for mowing and baling etc. So, they accomplished it by having both a hand clutch and foot clutch. Depressing the foot clutch disconnected both the PTO and tranny but pulling back the hand clutch disconnected the tranny while allowing the pTO to turn. AC was made famous by that live PTO feature which many like IHC and JD didnt have in the same years but the Olivers and Cockshutts did have live PTO's then but they engaged by a separate independant lever and had only the normal foot clutch.
