Feathering a brake to stop spinning

A lower post mentions using the brakes as a poor man's limitted slip. I do this on an old JD. Often when plowing one wheel will start to spin, applying a little pressure on that side's brake throws the power to the non-spinning side. This seems to work well however sometimes I hear some clunking when the power throws from one side to the other. It doesn't sound real bad but I still try to avoid doing this a lot, especially if the tractor is really under a load when it starts the spin. Is this a problem, a bad idea, or a normal affect of throwing the power over when it is loaded? Thanks
