There is nothing to get out of line by turning the engine over with the head removed,and replacing the gasket is hard to get wrong to the point that there is no compression. The only thing that comes to mind is IF the new head gasket is thinner than the old one,it would have closed up the valve gap and MAY be holding the valves off their seat. Check the valve adjustment to see if You have any"tight" valves.
