This has been discussed in the past, and just rings is a bad idea. You need to replace the bearings on the bottom, you may need to grind the crank some depending on wear. If it just smokes a little but still runs strong, I"d run it like it is for a little while and see if everything else is good. $3000 is cheap for a 2-105 in any condition.

The 2-85 like Dairyman said is the same engine w/out a turbo. 85 HP vs 105HP
