Dave, it is difficult to evaluate a tractor w/o seeing and hearing it. Is this a diesel? Does it have power steering? Try to look past the paint job. Do you see evidence of welding repairs or cracks in the castings anywhere? It is good if the rear tires are not too worn, look for major patches in the tires, the rear tires need to match in tread pattern. Front tires are cheap and don't last too long so just ignore them. Look at the pivot points in the front axle for excessive wear. Check the axles themselves and the steering linkage for wear. Hook the lift to the largest implement you can locate that will fit this tractor. See if the tractor can lift the implement, see if the lift will hold the implement at any height you set. Hook the drawbar by chain to sometime the tractor can not pull. Trying pulling and see if the tractor spins or if the clutch slips. If the tractor is a diesel see how quick it starts cold and unaided by starting fluid. The quicker the better. With only a slight turnover terrific! Look for oil leaks, slight wetting in a few areas is o k on a tractor this old. No steady dripping however. Look at the exhaust after the tractor warms up. Gas or diesel there should not be any blue smoke. Check the brakes, traveling forward at a slow pace apply one brake, there should be no harsh noise and the tractor should turn in the direction of the brake being applied. Repeat with the other brake, should be the same. Look at the gauges, all should work and everything should register normal. Before the tractor heats up, remove the radiator cap and observe the coolant level. If you can not see the level add some coolant and with the tractor running and the cap off look to verify that there are NO bubbles coming up through the coolant. Drive the tractor and go through all the gears, try going forward to reverse in each gear, evaluate the gears and shifting. I am certain that I have omitted something but this will give you and idea as to the condition of the tractor. Ask the sellers if there is any question that you should have asked but didn't.
