Alfalfa here in Southern Michigan is only about a inch high, just getting green, not really growing yet. You can spread right after you bale, but the longer you wait after cutting to drive back over the field, the more damage you do to the regrowth, mulch really is not going to add much nutrient value to your hay field compared to commercial fertilizer or several tons of cow manure per acre, so if you have a nice stand of alfalfa I would stay off of it until winter freezing before driving on it.
