New to Plowing

What do I need to do to prep a field for planting pumpkins. I"m gone out to find a 3-12" bottomw plow and a set of dics. How big is too big for a 40hp tractor? Secondly, I know it"s going to take this year to get it ready from next, but can I start about any time this year say end of May beginning of June? I"m just hoping it doesn"t turn out to be as tough as Allan"s field he did there. Thanks.
