OT - Rats

I got a call from a neighbor (lady) who lives alone. Her little dog killed a rat in her house. This is a pretty residential (rural) area, without alot of feed piles, grain storage, junk yards, etc. Around the house is mowed yard, flower boxes, etc. Anyhow, whats the best way to get rid of these things? I really need to help her out as she doesn't ask for much, so when she does, I guess I'd better be the neighbor. Thanks in advance, Bill
