Clean clean clean and leave no food for them around. Put the dog's food in an airtight metal container when its not being fed to the dog. If the rats don't have anything to eat they won't stick around.

We used to have terrible mouse troubles in my camp but my great uncle had stored alot of blankets and rugs inside. Once we got rid of that junk the mice didn't have as easy a time building nests so they don't get in as much.
