If you're dealing with the 8 speed 4000, then there is a small brake shoe that acts against the clutch housing. It's oil applied, as far as I know, and I do know that it's a poison prick to change. The last one I did, I dropped the brake shoe pivot pin down into the FWD transfer case off the telescopic magnet I was using to place it. So i ended up with the transfer case off, and I rotated the center housing about the axles until it was standing straight up. Also had the round access cover off. There's no easy way in there for somebody with average/large mits. You might get lucky if you try going in the top through the lift cover opening. Beyond that, it's a rear split... or mabey both. After having done that job, I was glad I had waited a few years until I had the tranny out anyway. I wouldn't bother again unless I needed to do the rear split anyway. Your mileage may vary.... Rod
