John - To smooth the engine at light load, run the the high speed mixture screw (the big one at the bottom of the carb) in 1/4 turn or so at a time. (If the engine stumbles or quits when you open the throttle from idle, you've run the screw in too far.) Modest backfiring/muffler flaming on an overhauling load is normal - relax and enjoy the show!! Excessive backfiring can mean the timing needs to be advanced a few degrees, or the centrifugal advance is not working.
