Is the engine a KT-19? Below is a link to the Kohler service manual for that engine. The wire from the voltage regulator goes to the battery, either directly, or through an ammeter. Have you had the engine running? It will be set up either with battery ignition, or solid-state ignition. With battery ignition, the other wire you mention gets fed battery voltage through the ignition switch. However, if it is a newer engine (Magnum) with electronic ignition, the other wire is only to be connected to a "kill" switch that shorts it to ground to shut the engine down. Putting battery voltage on the "kill" wire on an electronic ignition engine will let all the smoke out of the coil/module, and the engine won't run anymore. So. it is important to know what model it is, and if it has battery ignition, or self-powered electronic ignition.
