OT Squirrels

I have been doing battle with the squirrels for several months now. I live on an Island, and the squirrel population is running rampant! I have tried the red hot pepper trick, and the moth balls, and the spray and they keep coming back. I was going to start trapping them but you run into problems with relocating them. Can't shoot 'em because the wife won't let me. I even heard a guy got arrested for trapping squirrels because it's cruelty to animals.
Well Friday I had to pay a bill for $300 to replace the fuel injection wiring harness in my car because... get this... the squirrels ate the harness! The technician said he found a stash of nuts where my wiring harness used to be and a dead squirrel. Any thoughts to get rid of the squirrels? It's war now! Dave
