Squirrels are interesting critters. Last fall we planted eight acres of black walnuts, so I have spent a fair amount of time doing the Elmer Fudd bit, defending my potential trees. When the seeds came up I discovered that virtually all of the nuts dug up on one side of the field had been replanted within ten feet of the original sites. This played havoc with my neat 20' grid, but the seedlings at least are growing. On the north side of the field the purloined nuts have simply vanished. Gray squirrels dominate the fencerow to the south, red squirrels to the north. Then I hit upon Goheen's article listed below which reflects this difference in food-hoarding behaviour between reds and grays. It's well worth a read if you have nut-bearing hardwoods. www.unm.edu/~j*goheen*/*r*ep*r*ints/hoa*r*ding_CJZ.pdf Now that I've replaced the soffits on the house to keep them out, I feel a little more kindly toward the grays, but it's open season on the reds.

I’m par
