The reason the tractor only runs on both sides when you choke it is because only one side of the carburetor is feeding fuel through the jets. TRhe number series,(50,60,70) John Deere Waterloo tractors were the first to be equipped with the "Duplex" carburetor which is actually two seperate carburetion systems feeding from one fuel bowl. Think of it as a 2 barrel carburetor like on an automobile. The carburetoe probably needs cleaning and then tuning. Was working for JD when they brought out this systyem, and was actually a big improvement over the old single barrel carburetor system. It could be adjusted better and gave more fuel economy over the old system even though the old one barrel system had an economizer sysytem in it. The way to tune this tractor is to short out one spark plug wire and adjust the misture for the other cylinder, then restore the spark to the one you shorted and do the same procedure for the other cylinder, then set your idle speed screw.

Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
